ABSTRACT

The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) received a U.S.$2 million grant from Kaiser Permanente in January 2022 to increase confidence, equity, and uptake in the COVID-19 vaccine and other school required vaccinations in children ages 5 to 11 in Kaiser's nine markets (eight states and the District of Columbia). NASN was partnered with the Institute of Educational Leadership (IEL) in this initiative to examine ways both organizations could learn how school nurses (SNs) and community schools (CSs) could collaborate to address the goals of this project. NASN gave 54 Implementation Grants in two funding cycles in 2022 and is co-funding two SN-CS collaboration projects with IEL. The Part 1 article provides an overview of the project's goals, grant strategy and processes, grantee information, NASN created tools that resulted from this funding, and successful implementation of the project, which demonstrates NASN's capacity for future similar projects.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this consensus paper was to convene leaders and scholars from eight Expert Panels of the American Academy of Nursing and provide recommendations to advance nursing's roles and responsibility to ensure universal access to palliative care. Part I of this consensus paper herein provides the rationale and background to support the policy, education, research, and clinical practice recommendations put forward in Part II. On behalf of the Academy, the evidence-based recommendations will guide nurses, policy makers, government representatives, professional associations, and interdisciplinary and community partners to integrate palliative nursing services across health and social care settings. The consensus paper's 43 authors represent eight countries (Australia, Canada, England, Kenya, Lebanon, Liberia, South Africa, United States of America) and extensive international health experience, thus providing a global context for the subject matter. The authors recommend greater investments in palliative nursing education and nurse-led research, nurse engagement in policy making, enhanced intersectoral partnerships with nursing, and an increased profile and visibility of palliative nurses worldwide. By enacting these recommendations, nurses working in all settings can assume leading roles in delivering high-quality palliative care globally, particularly for minoritized, marginalized, and other at-risk populations.

ABSTRACT

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) has made marked contributions to the art and science of nursing, including establishment of resources and a community for oncology nurses across the United States. ONS's core values have evolved to innovation, excellence, advocacy, and inclusivity (ONS, 2021). While we know that these core values are, in virtue, admirable, there is a stark need to address another value-equity.

ABSTRACT

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) sponsors an annual symposium for participants to share in best practices across the globe. Due to COVID-19, the 2021 symposium was held virtually. With close to 700 participants, the ANCC PTAP team was challenged to provide an engaging virtual conference. This column speaks to the success of the symposium based on creating, cultivating, and celebrating best practices. [J Contin Educ Nurs. 2021;52(8):352-354.].

ABSTRACT

Annually, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) sets advocacy goals. The goals include legislative and policy priorities. The COVID-19 pandemic brought attention to the need to heighten advocacy efforts, specifically to provide for additional school nurses and supplies necessary to meet the challenge of safely returning students to school. While advocating at the national level, NASN also encouraged advocacy at the state and local levels. This article provides a brief summary of NASN's advocacy efforts as well as providing examples from two different state associations demonstrating the importance of collaboration in advocacy efforts in areas related to the pandemic and in general areas related to school nursing.

ABSTRACT

Nurses across specialties continue to play a key role in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Oncology nurses are no exception. In response to COVID-19 and other healthcare issues, nurses have established core competencies. These core competencies allow us to mentor others if we simply step up and take the lead.

ABSTRACT

Preparing the world to manage future pandemics must take priority. It is clear that we were not prepared for the COVID-19 pandemic which continues to cause great suffering around the world. Nurses and other health professionals everywhere must be involved in health policy planning and implementation of public health measures to combat this and future pandemics. Such preparation needs community policy involvement at grassroots levels and needs to be collaboratively instigated at international levels. The death so far of over 2000 nurses is unacceptable in this pandemic, and we need to better protect and sustain the workforce. The International Council of Nurses has been instrumental in data gathering of nurses' experiences during COVID-19. Key points from analysis of this data have been included in Second Progress Report of the World Health Organization's Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response. This paper summarises the key messages from this report, as well as the nursing shortage. The International Council of Nurses resounds the call for massive investment in nursing education, leadership and jobs, as well as protection for our nurses on the frontlines of the pandemic.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To identify research priorities addressing COVID-19 that build on the 2019-2022 Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Research Agenda, in alignment with ONS's mission to promote excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care. METHODS & VARIABLES: Priority areas were identified using a multistep approach combining rapid review of the literature; consultation with experts/stakeholders; and review of priorities from other funding agencies, public health, and cancer-focused organizations. RESULTS: The rapid research response team identified five priority areas for research related to COVID-19. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Oncology nurses are well positioned to address the research priorities and cross-cutting themes identified through this review. The use of innovative methodologic approaches and attention to disparities are necessary to advance cancer care related to COVID-19.
